Basic Course Information

Textbook

We use James Stewart’s Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th edition. There are several options for students:

  • Single variable calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th edition Covers 2A/B
  • Single variable calculus: UCI custom Edition Slimmed-down version omitting several sections not in
our syllabus. The covered material is identical.
  • Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th edition Full text: covers 2A/B/D/E. Students taking the entire
sequence should consider this text. There is a Multivariable calculus text available as a separate
purchase for students who already have Single variable and want to proceed to 2D/E.

Course Description

Math 2B is the second course in the calculus series, the study of change. We will introduce the concept of integration, its relation to the derivative from the Calculus I, and a variety of techniques to solve integrals. We will also introduce sequences and series and investigate their convergence.

"The importance of calculus is that most of the laws of science do not provide direct information about the values of variables which can be directly measured... This is why it's important to have a mathematical way of talking about change. That's why you see the concept of the derivative used throughout science..."

How to Succeed

To understand the material as best as possible, you need to apply your problem solving skills to all of the homework. It’s easy to skim problems and concepts, but it’s often harder to work them out step-by-step.

Try working out problems yourselves, but also collaborate with each other when you get stuck. Teaching others fosters understanding, even if you feel like you already get the problem.

You’re always welcome to ask me or your TA to help you with anything course-related. I’m usually available by appointment, just talk to me or email me to set up a time. In general, I’m here for you all and I want to make your lives easy. If you have questions or comments/concerns for me, please feel free to bring them to my attention anytime. Also, your feedback on my questions means a lot to me and helps me pace lecture, so feel free to add your thoughts to the conversation.

Worksheets

Worksheets will be given out in discussions on non-quiz days. They are to be completed during the course of the discussion, and they're a good way to get feedback on your work on a regular basis. Two absences will be excused in regards to discussion worksheets.

Webwork

Webwork is an online homework system used to supplement the textbook homework and quizzes in the Math 2A and 2B courses. During the academic year, Webwork assignments will be given weekly starting the second week of classes (and the first week of classes in the summer). Students will have one week to complete each assignment and can retry problems as many times as necessary until they are correct.

Webwork Login Page (must be on campus or use VPN) Links to an external site.

To access Webwork from off campus, students must use VPN Client Software (not the WebVPN). To download this software and for instructions on how to connect, see http://www.oit.uci.edu/vpn/ Links to an external site.

Recommended Homework Problems

A list of suggested homework problems from the book will be listed at the bottom of this course website (and also here Links to an external site.). These problems will not be graded, but I encourage you to please work on them alongside the pace of the course.

Quiz and exam problems will be based on the problems in the recommended homework. If you have questions on the assignment exercises or would like more clarification on the quality of your work, please come to my office hours.

Quiz Information

In discussion, there will be a total of 6-7 quizzes throughout the session. The quizzes will be roughly 20 minutes long on Thursdays (starting week 2). Missed quizzes can only be made up in circumstances which fall under the Exam/Quiz Makeup Policy. Please refer to this section for more details.

Midterm/Final Information

There will be two midterms and one final this quarter. The midterms are 50 minutes long, takes place in lecture, and will be based on all of the sections before it in the schedule. The final for this course is 120 minutes long, takes place in our lecture room, and is cumulative. Here is the tentative exam schedule:

Midterm1 : Friday 10/18, 3:00-3:50pm      Midterm 2: Friday 11/8, 3:00-3:50pm

Final: Monday 12/9, 4-6pm

Exam/Quiz Makeup Policy

Requests for make-up exams will be considered under the following guidelines:

§  If the final exam time violates the students religious creed.

§  If the final exam time would result in loss of wages constituting financial hardship, need for child care resulting in financial hardship, inability to procure transportation or loss of employment.

§  If there is a verifiable emergency, which prevents the student from taking the final examination at the scheduled time (e.g., serious illness, death of immediate family member, or serious accident).

Quizzes are treated as exams with regards to this makeup policy.

Enrollment and Waitlist

The UCI Math department has complete control over issues regarding enrollment in any of my courses. In particular, I do not have the ability to add you to my class from the waitlist or change which discussion you are enrolled in. For more information, please look at the UCI Math Department's Course Registration and Placement Information Page (Links to an external site.).

If you are on the waitlist in my course, it is required that you attend lectures and discussions, as well as take quizzes.

University and Course Conduct

Everyone in the classroom is expected to behave in a respectful and honest manner, both personally and academically.

Regarding exams, any suspicious or dishonest-looking activity will be treated as academic dishonesty. This will result in a zero on your exam, and the situation will be reported to the university. I take academic honesty very seriously, and I expect everyone to take it seriously as well.

All students are expected to adhere to the UCI Academic Integrity Policies. (Links to an external site.)

Disability Services

If you require any accommodations for this or other courses, it is recommended that you contact the Disability Services Center (here) Links to an external site.. I will adhere to any accommodations that the DSC makes aware to me.

Changes to the Syllabus

Please make note that this syllabus is subject to change throughout the quarter. I will make my best attempt to make it known if there will be any corrections or revisions.

LARC Tutoring Sessions

The Learning & Academic Resource Center’s Tutorial Program is part of the Office of the Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning at UCI goal to foster educational success for UCI’s diverse students population and is a campus-wide effort involving meaningful collaborations between faculty, staff, administrators, and students across schools. The LARC Tutorials are modified Supplemental Instruction. LARC Leaders facilitate discussion in LARC tutorials which are a non-remedial approach to learning that supports students toward academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.”  LARC tutorials consists of regularly scheduled, out-of-class group facilitation sessions. Sessions are facilitated by peers we refer to as LARC Leaders, who have previously succeeded in this course, and utilize peer-to-peer activities that facilitate discussion on key concepts, create study tools and review study strategies. Please see Student Success Initiatives, Athletics, Housing, or the DSC for Sponsorship opportunities. LARC is for everyone, and open to all students enrolled in this class; not just those students who are struggling. Check out the LARC Schedule at: enroll.LARC.UCI.edu Links to an external site.

For our Fall 2019 Math 2B course (44230), the part of the LARC schedule that is relevant to our class will be under the heading  Links to an external site.(44215, 44230, 44245, 44260, 44265, 44275, 44290).

At the request of one of the LARC tutors, here is some more information about their program:

  • LARC tutorial sessions meet twice a week for an hour each. They also offer midterm and final review sessions.
  • There are 3 tutorial leaders for Math 2B this quarter -- Kaylie, Kareena, and Stepfan. They've all taken the lecture before, and they plan attend one of the Math 2B professor's lectures to keep up to date with material covered.
  • Sessions are $110 per quarter and sponsorships are available.
  • For more information regarding enrollment, sponsorships, etc., please visit the LARC website (larc.uci.edu Links to an external site.) or their front office on the 3rd floor of ALP (Anteater Learning Pavilion).

This department site contains a list of suggested homework problems, sample syllabi, practice exams for the midterms and finals and Webwork information. It even contains useful review material, such as a  trig/algebra review sheet, video lectures and tutorials by UCI professors, and even videos on precalculus!

Email and How to Properly Contact Me

When asking for homework help, the more specific of a message you can send, the better. In particular, try to articulate which parts of a problem you are trying to understand and your approaches so far, such as partial solutions, when applicable. If you can post a picture of your partial solution, this is even better. Anything like this will allow me to be more specific in my response to you.

If you have more personal concerns, you are always welcome to contact me through email!

Please note that I am teaching multiple classes and sections, so be sure to state the class name, lecture time and discussion time when appropriate.

As always, I try to accommodate and help you all as much as possible. Kind, professional responses from students are very helpful in maintaining this atmosphere.

Thanks for reading this syllabus!
